Orientation Ceremony of MD in Ayurveda and MD in Unani & Board Certification – 2026
The Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine (PGIIM), University of Colombo, successfully conducted the Orientation Ceremony for the 5th Batch of MD in Ayurveda and Board Certification and the 2nd Batch of MD in Unani and Board Certification on 25 September 2026 at the PGIIM.
The programme brought together the newly enrolled MD trainees and existing trainees, members of the Board of Management, Chairpersons, Secretaries and members of the Boards of Studies and Specialty Boards, trainers, supervisors, consultants, and academic and administrative staff of the PGIIM.
The ceremony commenced with a welcome address by Mrs. H.K.I.P. Abeysinghe, Senior Assistant Registrar, PGIIM followed by the ceremonial lighting of the traditional oil lamp and the Dhanvantari Pooja, symbolising the commencement of the trainees’ academic journey and reflecting the traditional values of Indigenous Medicine.
The programme continued with the Shishyopanayana Samskara conducted by Dr. L.P.A. Karunathilake, Veteran Ayurveda Surgeon and Former Head of the Ayurveda Section of the Institute of Indigenous Medicine. This was followed by the Charaka Oath, administered by Professor S.K.M.K. Herapathdeniya, Chairperson of the Specialty Board of Bhaisajyakalpana & Rasashastra, PGIIM.
A key session of the ceremony focused on the national importance of the MD in Ayurveda/Unani and Board Certification degree programmes. The session was conducted by Professor S.M.S. Samarakoon, Director, and Professor M. Shiffa, Chairperson of the Board of Study in Unani Medicine, PGIIM. The session highlighted the academic and professional significance of postgraduate education and board certification in Ayurveda and Unani Medicine.
The trainees were subsequently introduced to essential administrative and financial rules and regulations, followed by a library induction. These sessions were conducted by Mrs. H.K.I.P. Abeysinghe, Senior Assistant Registrar; Ms. M.N. Anushika, Senior Assistant Bursar; and Mr. D.G.R.L. Gunarathna, Assistant Librarian, PGIIM.
The orientation programme provided a valuable platform to welcome the new postgraduate trainees to their academic and professional journey while familiarising them with the educational, administrative, clinical, and institutional framework of their respective programmes.
