The PGIIM
The Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine (PGIIM) is an educational institution established under the University of Colombo in accordance with the PGIIM Ordinance No. 2048/46 of 8 December 2017 and its subsequent amendments, under the provisions of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. The Institute plays a pivotal role in producing specialists in Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani medicine for the national health services, and in developing qualified academics for both state universities and the private sector.
Operational activities of the Institute commenced in March 2019 following the inaugural meeting of the Board of Management held on 25 February 2019. The PGIIM currently functions from the Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Borella, Colombo 08, as a temporary arrangement until a permanent facility is established.
The Board of Management provides overall governance to the Institute, including oversight of academic affairs, financial administration, establishment matters, and general operations.
Academic programmes are regulated by the Board of Study in Ayurveda Medicine, the Board of Study in Siddha Medicine, and the Board of Study in Unani Medicine, each responsible for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programmes in their respective disciplines. At present, the Institute conducts seven (07) MD programmes in Ayurveda, two (02) MD programmes in Siddha, and three (03) MD programmes in Unani under the relevant Specialty Boards. The Curriculum Development and Evaluation Committee (CDEC) and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) ensure continuous quality assurance and academic excellence within these programmes.
The PGIIM is the sole higher education institution in Sri Lanka authorized to award MD degrees and Board Certification in Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani medicine, which are recognized as equivalent to Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) Level 12.
