The PGIIM serves as an educational institute, primarily responsible for supplying specialists in major specialties of Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. It is attached to the University of Colombo and collaborates with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Higher Education. The Chief Executive Officer of the PGIIM is the Director of the Institute, and the Board of Management plays a crucial role in overseeing necessary actions. Academic decisions are made by the Board of Studies and the specialty boards. There are no of committees to take decision for the relevant area.
The PGIIM runs various programs in Ayurveda, including MD programs in Ayurveda Kaumarabrithya, Kayachikitsa, Prasutithanthra, Shalyatantra, and Swasthavritta, each with Board Certification. Additionally, there is an MD program in Unani Illmul Advia with Board Certification. The institute has mentioned that there are pending programs to be approved in Siddha, Ayurveda, and Unani, along with some PG Diplomas of the Indigenous medicine sector.
